Punching Bags For Kids

When Training Kids in MMA, Muay Thai, Boxing, and various other styles of martial arts, the benefits of punching bag training cannot be overlooked. Striking the heavy bag with correct technique develops power, timing and distance. When starting your child out with a kid’s punching bag remember to take it slow. Technique always comes before speed and power. The goal is to practice and train proper form and build punching and kicking power on a strong foundation. The end result will be a stronger, faster, and balanced fighter, not to mention the decreased risk of injury.

Below is a list of the most important considerations when selecting a punching bag for your child.

1) Punching bag equipment for Kids

Hand wraps and bag gloves are a must. This is especially true for kids striking the punching bag. If your child is training kicks on the bag, you might want to also consider shin and instep guards.

2) Punching bag type best for kids

There are many freestanding kids’ punching bags available on the market, the freestanding bag saves space, is cost effective, and can easily be moved. This makes it great to store when not being used. Punching bag stands and wall mounts are also available for kid’s size punching bags.

Before choosing the above options, consider this. Results and Fun! Although a bag stand allows the punching bag to swing, mobility is limited because of the stand itself, this is a big factor if your child plans on drilling kicks and combinations. A freestanding bag although very convenient, does not swing and diminishes the practice of rhythm, timing, distance, as well as foot work.  Kids have a tendency to get bored with the freestanding bag quickly.  If your child is serious about developing boxing and/or martial art skills it is highly recommended to go with a kid’s size hanging bag, hung from overhead, allowing 360 degree mobility around the bag.

3) Punching bag weight best for kids

If you purchase a punching bag that is too heavy for your child, it will just sit there and not be used very much. Kids love feedback and when they strike the heavy bag and it moves and swings about they feel empowered and want to hit the bag some more. Don’t make the mistake of getting a punching bag that is to heavy your kid.

Suggested weight of a punching bag for kids who weigh 50 - 100 pounds

Kids Boxing Bag - 40 to 60 Pounds

Kids MMA Heavy Bag - 40 to 60 Pounds

Kids Muay Thai Bag - 60 to 80 Pounds

Kids Kickboxing Bag - 60 to 80 Pounds

Karate Kids Bag - 40 to 80 Pounds
